Viana do Castelo

VIANA DO CASTELO

Viana do Castelo, the folklore capital.

Viana do Castelo, founded by a Foral letter by King Afonso III in 1258, is the atlantic district furthest to the North of Portugal. Possessing several architectural styles, Viana do Castelo is important for the Portuguese economy, due to its coastal placement. It’s in Viana do Castelo that we can see one of the most beautiful pilgrimages in the world, the Nossa Senhora da Agonia Pilgrimage. It is also the capital of Minho’s rich folklore, with an important handicraft industry. Viana do Castelo belongs to the region of the famous “green wine”, the most Portuguese of all wines.
